The Narrator
Although his name is unidentified in the novel, film adaptations have named him 'Ma'.
He is a seventeen-year-old boy who appreciates learning and is musically gifted.
As the novel progresses, he and Luo both develop affection for the Little Seamstress.

Luo
In contrast to the narrator, Luo is more confident and extroverted. He gains a reputation as a good storyteller, which later acts in favour of him in gaining the admiration of the Little Seamstress. He is amicable and adaptable. His quick thinking skills rescue the narrator many times in his multiple ordeals throughout the novel.

The Little Chinese Seamstress
The Little Seamstress is a charming mountain girl who is the subject of all young men's admiration in the rural countryside. She falls in deep love with Luo. However, she ultimately brings herself to sacrifice her love in order to pursue her personal ambitions. Out of the three major characters, the Little Seamstress is the one who is most profoundly influenced by the western novels.
